Aloha! I’m so honored you reached this point in my sentence let alone clicked on my blog! My name is Maile Grace, and I was born and raised in Hawaii on the island of O‘ahu…which is why I referred to myself as a coconut girl in case you were concerned. Get it? If not, I still have faith in both you and me. Throughout my senior year in high school I was faced with possibly the toughest decision of my life thus far. Should I stay on the rock or follow in Katy Perry’s footsteps and become a California girl? I chose Katy.
I’m currently a sophomore at Chapman University in bright sunny and droughty, Orange. After being undecided on what I wanted to do for the first nineteen years of my life (currently twenty), I finally took the initiative to declare my major in Strategic and Corporate Communication with a double minor in Sociology and Integrated Educational Studies. Fancy, right? I'm also a member of Hawaii Club, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Alpha Kappa Psi (the professional business fraternity). Even though you’re already impressed, I work under University Advancement as a student communication assistant, where I manage the Twitter page and create visually appealing blogs for UA staff and Chapman alumni. In addition, I thoroughly enjoy serving at “The Shack”, a popular local sports bar, when I’m home in Hawaii for Christmas and summer break (see attached resume). There I'm able to inebriate customers at a costly price and witness firsthand what the consumption of alcohol can do to a person as well as the aftermath of "happy hour" in all its glory. Easily the most entertaining job I have, hands down. However, that's an entirely different blog. Back to home.
My transition from Hawaii to California wasn’t easy, still it’s been the most rewarding and eye-opening experience I’ve had. Not only did I learn how to go a month without doing laundry and how to survive solely off of microwaveable foods, but I learned who I am as a person, what makes me unique, what I love, and how to be an adult. More close to my heart, I learned to appreciate home tremendously, which is why I created this blog! Because I'm privileged to experience a different culture here in Cali, I want to share the aloha spirit with those not from Hawaii. Here I reminisce and share with you my favorite places, local food/culture, and spontaneous adventures both home and in California. I hope the love I have for my home is contagious and that those who come across my blog are inspired to cherish what makes them and their home so unique. More importantly, I hope to expose people to Hawaii lifestyle and share the beauty, food, and love that I was blessed to experience growing up .
